There’s something special about a finding a wedding venue in Orlando for a small wedding that combines elegant architecture with Florida’s natural beauty. That’s what Wendy and Ben found when they had their wedding at Lake Lucy Estate: a historic estate mansion, a majestic oak tree overlooking the lake, open green spaces beneath bright Florida skies, and all the natural I could ask for as a wedding photographer.

But they were looking for more than a beautiful setting. They wanted the convenience of getting ready, holding the ceremony, and celebrating the reception all in one location. They envisioned an outdoor ceremony beneath the large oak tree without asking their guests to travel far outside Orlando. Lake Lucy Estate gave them exactly that.
One of the most memorable parts of their reception was the pizza truck, which was an instant hit with their guests. The entire day had a relaxed, joyful atmosphere that suited their intimate wedding perfectly.
Wendy and Ben also wanted their wedding photos to feel natural and candid. As a Lake Lucy Estate wedding photographer, this is one of my favorite parts of the job. Candid photography may look spontaneous, but consistently creating meaningful candid images requires years of experience anticipating where those moments are likely to happen, staying alert throughout the day, and knowing when to step in and when to stay out of the way.
The Wedding Venue: First Impressions of Lake Lucy Estate
The first thing you notice when arriving at Lake Lucy Estate is how unexpectedly serene it feels. Located just 18 minutes from downtown Orlando, the property is tucked into a typical Orlando neighborhood, yet stepping onto the grounds feels like entering a private country estate.
The historic mansion is surrounded by open green spaces, with a large oak tree and lake in the distance. The estate itself features Spanish and Mediterranean architectural details that add charm and variety to the wedding photos.
As a wedding photographer who has worked at many venues throughout Orlando and Central Florida, I especially appreciate the large windows throughout the house. They bring in so much beautiful natural light that works particularly well for portraits, getting-ready photos, and wedding details such as the rings.
The property can accommodate up to 20 overnight guests, making it especially practical for an intimate wedding. The couple and their closest guests can stay at the estate the night before, get ready in the morning, celebrate the wedding, party all night, and stay on-site afterward. There’s also ample parking for guests, a full kitchen and an outdoor courtyard with a grill.
For a small wedding, that combination of privacy, convenience, and variety makes Lake Lucy Estate particularly appealing.
Getting Ready at Lake Lucy Estate
One of the advantages of having a small wedding at Lake Lucy Estate is being able to use the mansion itself for getting ready. Rather than being confined to a small bridal suite, Wendy and Ben had the space and privacy of the entire house.
Hair and makeup were set up near the dining room on the first floor, where large windows provided plenty of natural light.
The house also provided plenty of options for photographing the details. I used one of the large windows near the staircase to photograph Wendy’s wedding dress before documenting the getting-ready moments between her and her mom. Ben got ready comfortably in the room where they had spent the night before coming downstairs for a few portraits near one of the many large windows.
That same window light was ideal for photographing smaller details, including the wedding rings and invitations.
Wendy exchanged gifts with her parents and shared a heartfelt moment with them before the ceremony.
The Ceremony Beneath the Oak Tree
Wendy and Ben’s guests gathered beneath the large oak tree with the lake and Florida sky creating a backdrop of layered blue tones.
Ben walked down the aisle first and took his place while I waited for Wendy and her dad to come down the steps of the estate. When they began walking toward the ceremony, there was an unmistakable sense of pride and happiness between them.
I knew it was important to photograph both sides of that moment: Wendy’s connection with her dad as they walked together and Ben’s reaction as he watched them approach.
This is one of the reasons I value having two photographers at a wedding. One photographer can concentrate on the primary action while the second photographer can focus on reactions happening elsewhere. It creates two perspectives of the same moment and adds considerably more variety to the final gallery.

Wedding Photos at Lake Lucy Estate
Lake Lucy Estate offers a surprising amount of variety for wedding portraits without requiring a long walk between locations.
For Wendy and Ben’s portraits, I positioned the sun behind them to create softer, more flattering light rather than having direct sunlight falling across their faces. We used the large oak tree and surrounding landscape for some portraits, then incorporated the architecture of the estate for a completely different look.
We also photographed inside the mansion, making use of the beautiful window light and the character of the house.
The variety of possibilities for photos is one of my favorite things about weddings at Lake Lucy Estate. The property is compact enough that moving from one area to another doesn’t require a significant amount of time, but there are enough different environments to create a gallery that doesn’t feel repetitive.
After portraits, it was easy to transition into cocktail hour and the reception without spending a large portion of the wedding day traveling between locations.
The Reception
After the ceremony, the chairs were quickly replaced with tables for the reception. Some guests played cornhole while others grabbed drinks and caught up with friends and family.
Then the pizza truck arrived.
It was an absolute hit. Guests enjoyed as many slices as they could handle, and the casual dinner fit the atmosphere of this small wedding perfectly.
The celebration eventually moved toward the pool, where Wendy and Ben shared their first dance followed by dances with their parents.
One of the advantages of photographing a small wedding is the amount of meaningful interaction happening among the people who are there. With fewer guests, there’s often more opportunity to notice the relationships between family members and friends rather than focusing exclusively on the couple.
That became especially meaningful when Wendy received her finished gallery. She was surprised by how many candid moments I’d photographed that she hadn’t seen herself during the whirlwind of the wedding day.
When leaving me a review, she wrote:
He (Andy) not only took incredible portraits of me and my husband, but he also captured SO many special candid moments of our friends and family! There are photos of my parents in the gallery that I will absolutely treasure for the rest of my life. And he caught so many of the little sweet looks between me and my husband throughout the day!
Those are the photographs that can be easy to miss when you’re experiencing your own wedding. You’re busy getting married, talking to guests, dancing, eating, and trying to take everything in. You can’t be everywhere at once.
